Norwalk's Slammer Tennis World Holds Usta Tournaments NORWALK, Conn. -- Young players from all over Fairfield County and beyond competed recently in Slammer Tennis World’s U.S. Tennis Association tournaments at Norwalk High School. Andrew Lawless of Weston won the boys 18-and-under tournament, sweeping through the event without dropping a set. Fairfield Prep Students Commended As Merit Scholars FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Nine Fairfield Prep students were commended in the National Merit Scholarship Program, with senior Dylan Hawkes honored as a National Merit semifinalist. The seniors are recognized based on the PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test taken in their junior year. Over 1.5 million students from across the nation entered the competition by taking the test, and the Prep winners were selected based on placement in the Top 5 percent in highly competitive Connecticut. Darien Climbs To No. 2 In MaxPreps Football Rankings FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- Darien jumped up to No. 2 and New Canaan fell to No. 3 in the latest state rankings by MaxPreps. Southington moved into the No. 1 spot. Darien climbed four spots with a 21-17 win over previously unbeaten St. Joseph, which had been ranked No. 2. New Canaan Restaurant Hosts Event For Breast Cancer Research NEW CANAAN, Conn. -- Barolo Trattoria in New Canaan will host a benefit for the William Raveis Breast Cancer Research Fund on Tuesday, Oct. 7. New Canaan, Darien 6th Grade Football Teams Play At West Point NEW CANAAN and DARIEN, Conn. -- Former Army football players Steve Cavoli and Mike Graham took their 6th grade football teams from Darien and New Canaan to West Point on Saturday for a rare off-site Fairfield County Football League game. Bedford Rower Helps Norwalk Team Win Medals At N.Y. Regatta POUND RIDGE/BEDFORD, N.Y. -- Four local rowers propelled four Norwalk River Rowing boats to medals in its opening regatta, with two boats placing first, one second and one third. In all, 12 of the 27 boats Norwalk River Rowing brought to the “Tail of the Fish” returned with medals: three golds, three silvers and six bronzes. Fairfield Softball Team Takes 2nd In Southbury Tournament FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Fairfield Fury 12-and-under softball team finished second at the Pomperaug Panther Prowl Tournament in Southbury over the weekend. The tournament featured several teams who are new to the U12 rules, with all teams being members of the Fairfield County Fastpitch Softball League.
