John 'Jack' Ward, 92, Former Peekskill Resident PEEKSKILL, N.Y. -- John "Jack" Joseph Ward -- a Spring Hill, Florida, resident, formerly of Peekskill, died on Tuesday, Aug. 16. He was 92.Ward enlisted in the Navy when he was 18, and he served during World War II aboard the carrier USS Block Island. The carrier was sunk in the Atlantic on May 29, 1944, one week before the Normandy invasion and one week before his 20th birthday. Following his Navy service, Ward worked for several railroad companies, including the Boston and Maine, New York Central, Penn Central and the Long Island Railroad.
