Westchester Cyclists And Runners Invited To South Salem Biathlon WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. – Area cyclists and runners are invited to test their skills at the fourth annual Church Tavern Biathlon to be held on Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 1, 2014. The event begins at 9:30 a.m. at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 82 Spring St. in South Salem. The course consists of a seven-mile bike ride up Church Tavern Road and past Lake Truesdale, followed by a four-mile run up Church Tavern and back to the finish line, all on secondary roadways. Fairfield Police Seek Help To Find Baseball Field Vandals FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Fairfield police are seeking help from the community to find vandals who spray-painted the scoreboard and dugout at Mill Hill Elementary School, the home of the Fairfield American Little League baseball program. Fairfield American won the District 2 and Division 1 championship. It was scheduled to play Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Orange against Farmington for the Section 1 championship. Richard Miller, 83, Served On Board Of Selectmen In Weston WESTON, Conn. -- Richard Miller, a longtime Weston resident who served three terms on the town’s Board of Selectmen, died on Friday, July 18. He was 83. Miller, a Democrat, became active in town politics after moving to Weston in 1984. He stepped down from the Board of Selectmen in 2007. During his time on the board, he was a school advocate who also supported expansion projects. He also supported senior citizen causes, including tax-abatement and tax-deferral programs. Fairfield 11-Year-Old Girls Win State Softball Title FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Fairfield Little League Girls Softball 11-year-old all-star team clinched the Little League state championship on Sunday, July 20, with a 14-0 win over Waterford. The game, played in Rocky Hill before a crowd of Fairfield and Waterford fans, was never in doubt from the beginning. Norwalk 9-Year-Olds Advance In Cal Ripken State Tournament NORWALK, Conn. -- The Norwalk 9-year-old Cal Ripken All-Stars won the first two games of the state tournament in South Meriden over the weekend. Norwalk beat Ledyard, 9-8, and South Meriden, 4-1, to advance in the winners' bracket. In the game against Ledyard, Norwalk took a 7-3 lead only to see Ledyard rally for an 8-7 advantage going into the bottom of the sixth. Stamford Girls Basketball Team Goes 6-2 In AAU Tourney STAMFORD, Conn. -- Stamford Peace earned a top 16 finish out of 57 teams in the recently completed AAU eighth-grade girls national championships in Orlando, Fla. Peace, coached by Colette Kelly, posted a 6-2 record over five days to account for the best nationals finish since 2011, when Peaces then-eighth-grade girls finished sixth in the same event. Peace compiled a 4-0 record in pool play in capturing the FF Pool championship.
