Darien's Taylor Named State's Gatorade Volleyball Player Of The Year DARIEN, Conn. -- Darien High School’s Izzy Taylor was named the Connecticut Gatorade Player of the Year for volleyball. Taylor, a junior, had 304 kills and 36 aces for Darien, leading the Blue Wave to the Class LL championship. Darien finished 25-2, with both losses coming to out of state schools at a tournament in New Jersey. Taylor also had a .508 kill percentage and 179 digs. She was a first-team All-State selection, and won MVP honors in the state title game against Cheshire when she collected 22 kills, eight digs, six service receptions, an ace and one block. Weston Girls Win Youth Cheerleading National Title WESTON, Conn. -- The Weston Youth Trojans cheerleading team won first place in the American Youth Football cheerleading competition in Kissimmee, Fla. Weston won first place in the 13-and-under Small Red Division. The girls scored 80.6, followed by Meriden, Conn. with 73.7. There were 11 teams in the competition. Wilton Running Club Girl Takes 5th In National Cross Country Race WILTON, Conn. -- Angela Saidman of Wilton Running Club finished fifth Saturday in the USA Track and Field cross country championships in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Saidman, competing in the girls 13-14-year-old race, covered the 4,000-meter distance in 14:22.7, an average time of 5:47 per mile. Taylor Roe won the race in 13:52. There were 384 girls in the race. In the 11-12 girls race, Wilton Running Club’s Tess Pisanelli finished 54th. She finished the 3-kilometer course in 11:12.82, an average of 6:01 per mile.

Iona's Casimir Named Rookie Of The Week Again NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. -- Iona College freshman Schadrac Casimir, from Stamford, Conn., was named the Rookie of the Week by the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. Casimir, a graduate of Trinity Catholic, scored 29 points for the Gaels in a 92-89 road loss at Monmouth University. He also had three assists and one turnover. He added 19 points and three assists in a 77-64 over Rider University, and finished the week with 16 points in a 91-84 win over Indiana State. Casimir  is averaging 16.6 points per game for Iona (6-3). He also won the rookie honor from the MAAC last week.
