Yonkers Students Honored For Martin Luther King Essays YONKERS, N.Y. -- Mayor Mike Spano announced three winners in the Mayor's Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. essay contest. Yonkers students Ray Trayfors (fifth grade, Casimir Pulaski), Karla Garcia (sixth grade, De Hostos School) and Ata Amponsah (senior, Yonkers Middle High School) were the winners. More than 500 students submitted essays. The students will recite their work at the city’s annual Black History Month Ceremony on Thursday at 6 p.m. in the Ceremonial Courtroom of City Hall.

Federal agents have been investigating reports of excessive force and discrimination for eight years, the report said, and some residents say the pattern persists. Connecticut Has 3rd Lowest Percentage Of Low-Income Students FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- Connecticut has the third lowest percent of low-income students in public schools in the nation, according to a report released last week and posted on CTbythenumbers.info. In Connecticut, 36 percent of students were classified as low-income in the study by the National Center for Education statistics. New Hampshire (27 percent) and North Dakota (30 percent) were the only other states with a lower percentage of low-income students in public schools.
