Westport Weston Family Y Receives $40 Million From Woman's Estate WESTPORT, Conn. -- The estate of a longtime Westport resident is donating $40 million to the Westport Weston Family YMCA and Norwalk Hospital. Ruth Thomas Bedford, who actively supported both institution, died June 15, 2014, at the age of 99. A YMCA trustee emeritus, Bedford was instrumental in helping the Family YMCA to renovate and expand its original downtown Westport location during the 1980s. William Ewald, Speechwriter For Eisenhower, Dies In Greenwich GREENWICH, Conn. -- William B. Ewald Jr., a speechwriter for President Dwight D. Eisenhower, died Monday at his home in Greenwich. Ewald, 89, died of respiratory failure, his son William B. Ewald III told The New York Times. After Eisenhower left office, he wrote a two-volume memoir with Ewald. Eisenhower’s memoirs, “The White House Years: Mandate for Change, 1953-1956” and “Waging Peace, 1956-1961,” were written after Ewald spent four years with Eisenhower at his home in Gettysburg, Pa.
