Thousands Of NY Inmates Wrongly Punished Over Faulty Drug Testing, Report Finds Solitary confinement, delays in parole eligibility, and suspended family visits were imposed on thousands of New York prison inmates over faulty drug testing. A report by the New York State Inspector General released Thursday, Nov. 30, found that over 2,000 inmates were wrongly punished between 2016 and 2020 due to defects in both the manufacturing and administration of drug tests. The tests, made by Sirchie Finger Print Laboratories, were used by the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS) to detect drugs in prison contraband. New Update: Capital Region Highway Partially Reopens Following Tractor-Trailer Crash This story has been updated. A major interstate in the region was shut down in both directions following a tractor-trailer crash that left a person seriously injured. The Schenectady County wreck happened just before 3 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 5, on I-88 in the town Duanesburg. According to New York State Police, a box truck drove off the roadway near exit 24 and went down a steep ravine. The driver was taken to Albany Medical Center with serious injuries. Still No Suspect After LIE Hit-Run Crash Killing 'Loving, Goofy' Husband, Father It’s been a year since a beloved husband and father was killed in a hit-and-run crash on the Long Island Expressway, and police still have no suspects. Robert Twiford, age 61, of Melville, died Dec. 5, 2022, after being struck on the off-ramp of eastbound I-495 at exit 60 in Ronkonkoma. 14-Year-Old Student With Knife Prompts Lockdown At Capital Region High School, Police Say A 14-year-old is facing charges after allegedly being caught with a knife on a school campus in the region. Police in Albany were called at around 1:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 4, for a person with a weapon at Albany High School. When they arrived, they located the student and arrested him without incident, according to Albany Police. 18-Year-Old Speeding, On Phone Moments Before Crash Killing Long Island Man, DA Says An 18-year-old has been charged in connection with an alleged distracted driving crash that killed a Long Island man. Nicolas Apostolides, of West Babylon, was arraigned on manslaughter and related charges in Suffolk County Court on Friday, Dec. 1, in the death of David Martinez. $28K Theft: Home Health Aide From Capital Region Admits Stealing From Dementia Patient A home health aide from the region has admitted stealing thousands of dollars from her patient. Rensselaer County resident Lakeisha Stewart, age 43, of Rensselaer, pleaded guilty to attempted grand larceny in Albany County Court on Friday, Dec. 1. Stewart admitted that between January and February 2023, she cashed several checks from the victim’s account while working as their home health aide.
