Anthony J. Surace, 88, Longtime Garfield Resident GARFIELD, N.J. -- Anthony J. Surace, of Garfield, died on Saturday, June 18. He was 88. Born in Brooklyn, Surace lived there for 40 years before moving to Garfield 48 years ago. He served in the Army for six years during the Korean War. He worked at Nabisco in Fair Lawn for 30 years, and at the age of 72 he began working at Spencer Savings and Loan in Garfield, and worked there for 10 years. He was a past commander and life member of the Garfield VFW Post 2867, a parishioner of Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Garfield and member of the Holy Name Society. Surace is survived by his daughter…

LaSala graduated from the Fordham University School of Pharmacy and worked for Rite Aid as a pharmacist and division manager in the tri-state area for 25 years. Cliffside Park Students Learn About Holocaust From Former Teacher CLIFFSIDE PARK, N.J. -- Harriet Raphael -- a former teacher at Cliffside Park's School No. 3, whose mother survived multiple concentration camps -- stopped by to speak to the sixth-grade students about the Holocaust. The students recently finished reading the popular Jane Yolen award-winning novel "Devil's Arithmetic," in which a modern girl experiences the horrors of a concentration camp. Martial Artist Provides Self-Defense Lesson At Dwight-Englewood ENGLEWOOD, N.J. -- Phil Ross -- author of "Survival Strong: a Guide to Street Survival and Strength" -- recently conducted a workshop at Dwight-Englewood High School. Ross of Mahwah held the three-hour certification for the Physical Education Department at the high school. The school is contemplating a self-defense unit in physical education offerings, for graduating seniors. Ross' seminars have lead to similar programs in four other Bergen County school districts.
