Report: 7 Percent Of Putnam Residents Enrolled In Obamacare PUTNAM COUNTY, N.Y. -- Seven percent of residents in Putnam County are enrolled in health insurance programs created through the exchanges in the Affordable Care Act, according to a story in Politco. Also, the number of Putnam residents who enrolled in ACA plans in the second year of enrollment increased by 16 percent. The state average was 12 percent. The Politco story said the Affordable Care Act, commonly referred to as Obamacare, has become more popular in Western New York than in other regions of the state. Fresh Off First Chsfl Title In 49 Years, Stepinac Is Back For More WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- With 10 starters returning from last year’s team, hopes are high for the Archbishop Stepinac football team. The Crusaders from White Plains went 12-1 last year, including a 16-14 win over Iona Prep in the Catholic High School Football League Class AAA championship game. Sister Julia Hannigan, 99, Maryknoll Sister In Ossining OSSINING, N.Y. -- Sister Julia Hannigan, a Maryknoll missioner to China, died Saturday, Aug. 15. She was 99 years. Hannigan was born Sept. 30, 1915, in Brooklyn to John and Julia McCleary Hannigan. Christened Julia Regina Hannigan, Sister Julia was one of five children born to the couple. All members of her immediate family have predeceased her. Hannigan joined Maryknoll Sisters on Dec. 8, 1933, with a passion to minister in China, a calling she fulfilled through work in teaching and counseling. Stamford Mayor Martin Steps On Curtain Call Stage This Weekend STAMFORD, Conn. -- Stamford Mayor David Martin is scheduled to make cameo appearances in the play "Oliver" this weekend at Curtain Call. Martin will have small speaking roles in the Friday and Saturday shows. Martin will appear at the end of the opening scene as an orphan in the children's show. Westchester Legend Elton Brand Retires After 16 Years In NBA PEEKSKILL, N.Y. -- Peekskill High grad Elton Brand retired Thursday after 16 years in the National Basketball Association. Brand was the first draft pick of the Chicago Bulls in the 1999 draft. Brand also played for the Los Angeles Clippers, Philadelphia 76ers, Atlanta Hawks and Dallas Mavericks. Brand was a two-time NBA all-star, but injuries limited his playing time later in his career. He averaged 24.6 points per game for the Clippers in 2005-06, the best of his career. He averaged 11.6 rebounds for the Clippers in 2001-02. For his career, he averaged 16.1 points and 8.6 rebounds. …

Norwalk's Redd Suffers Major Knee Injury In NFL Preseason Game NORWALK, Conn. -- Norwalk's Silas Redd suffered an apparent season-ending knee injury Thursday in the Washington Redskins' preseason football game against Cleveland. Redd is believed to have torn the anterior cruciate ligament and possibly the medial collateral ligament in his right knee, according to The Washington Post.
