'She Was Always Kind': 19-Year-Old College Student From Capital Region Dies After Cancer Battle Friends and family are mourning the loss of a beloved college student from the region following her death from cancer. Saratoga County resident Sophia John, of Ballston Spa, died Monday, Dec. 18, at the age 19 after a short battle with leukemia, according to her obituary. John graduated from Shenendehowa High School in 2022 and was a sophomore at Bentley University in Waltham, Massachusetts, where she was majoring in corporate finance and accounting. Man Killed In Overnight Fire At Long Island Home A man has been found dead hours after a fire tore through a Long Island home. Firefighters were called at around 4:40 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 26, for a fire at a Melville house located on Wilmington Drive near Westbourne Lane. Nearly 100 firefighters from multiple departments spent two hours working to get the fire under control, officials said. Flames eventually spread to much of the home, causing its roof to collapse. 'Historic Moment': Hochul Enacts Task Force Focusing On Missing Women, Girls Of Color Leaders in New York are aiming to put greater focus on cases involving missing girls and women of color. NYers Most Likely To Suffer From Sleep Disorders, Report Finds If you find yourself struggling to get a good night’s sleep, you’re in good company, according to a new report. New Yorkers are the most likely to suffer from sleep disorders, according to a study from Eachnight. The website looked at Google search data for the most common sleep-related issues like “insomnia,” “sleep apnea,” and “restless leg syndrome” per 100,000 people. Prop Movie Money Used By NY Woman To Steal Car, Police Say A woman from the region is accused of pulling a fast one on a car seller by using counterfeit money to steal their vehicle. State Police in Rensselaer County said troopers were first contacted in July 2023 by a Troy resident claiming that a woman had tried to purchase their car using fraudulent money.
