ENGLEWOOD, N.J. -- Happy birthday to Dizzy Gillespie, who, with his wife, called Englewood home from the mid '60s until his death. Gillespie would have turned 99 this Friday.
Born in South Carolina John Birks Gillespie, he inimitably played the trumpet, sang, composed and was a bandleader. He, like fellow trumpeter and singer Louis Armstrong, is known for his mightily puffed-out cheeks, as he played.

Monroe Cancels Harvest Festival Due To Rainy Forecast
MONROE, Conn. -- Monroe officials announced Friday morning that the Harvest Festival, scheduled for this Saturday, Oct. 22, has been canceled, based on a grim weather forecast.
"After checking with our storm people and then seeing on the Weather Channel that Monroe has an 80 percent chance of rain along with high winds, I will be canceling our Harvest Festival for this year," the town noted in a Facebook post.
The festivities will be rescheduled to Sunday, June 4, making it a "a true 'Monroe Day," since they will dovetail with the 25th Annual Sprint for Monroe. Additiona…
Montvale Throws Giant Fall Block Party With Over 100 Vendors
MONTVALE, N.J. -- Montvale's Street Fair returns on Sunday,
Oct. 23, with a huge array of vendors, live entertainment and more.
"Paragon Drive in Montvale will be transformed into a giant block party as the Montvale Chamber of Commerce is holding its 6th Annual Street Fair," organizers note.
The Street Fair will feature more than 100 vendors, including an arts and crafts section; live entertainment throughout the day and karaoke; and an array of kids activities, including pony rides, a petting zoo, face-painting, a climbing wall and more.
