Hockey Star Pacioretty Named New Canaan Sports Person Of The Year FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- Max Pacioretty, U.S. Olympic hockey player and an NHL standout, is the 2014 Sports Person of the Year in his hometown of New Canaan, announced the Fairfield County Sports Commission. The commission announced its 2014 Sports Persons of the Year in each of the 15 communities it directly serves. Danbury Drops Final Pool Play Game At Cal Ripken World Series DANBURY, Conn. -- Danbury finished pool play with a 1-3 record after losing to Maryland, 5-2, in a game late Wednesday night at the Cal Ripken World Series in Aberdeen, Md. Danbury won on Thursday, 5-0, in the consolation bracket of the World Series against Homewood, Ill., the Ohio Valley champion. Danbury’s fate was already decided before Wednesday’s final pool play game. Still, Danbury took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run home run by Javon Hernandez. Marcia Anne Garvan Coyle, 90, Greenwich Resident GREENWICH, Conn. -- Marcia Anne Garvan Coyle, 90, a long-time resident of Greenwich, died on Aug. 11. Coyle was the daughter of Francis Patrick Garvan and Mabel Brady,Following six brothers and sisters, she was born Sept. 11, 1923, in Roslyn, N.Y., on Long Island. After attending the Convent of the Sacred Heart in New York for high school followed by Manhattanville College. Mrs. Coyle met and married Frank James Coyle in 1946. Pound Ridge Rowers Win Gold For Norwalk Team At Canadian Regatta POUND RIDGE, N.Y. -- Pound Ridge residents Kris Petreski and Liam McDonough won a gold medal rowing for Norwalk River Rowing at the 132nd Royal Canadian Henley Regatta in St. Catharines, Ontario. The Canadian Henley is widely regarded as the premier amateur rowing event in North America. Wilton Swimmer Shines At Junior National Championships WILTON, Conn. -- Stephen Holmquist of the Wilton Y Wahoo Swim Team participated in the 2014 Speedo Junior National Championships held at the William Wollett, Jr. Aquatics Center in Irvine, Calif. The meet featured the nation's top up-and-coming swimmers ages 18 and under. Holmquist had a great week, starting with the 1500 freestyle where he dropped more than 25 seconds and was on the podium with a sixth place finish. Triathlon In Norwalk On Sunday Brings In New Look NORWALK, Conn. -- A triathlon and duathlon in Norwalk will have a different look this year. Sunday’s Norwalk Sprint Triathlon and Duathlon begins at 6:30 a.m. at Shady Beach. The race, which is put on by TriFitness of Fairfield, was formerly a women’s only event.
